Terminal Velocity A3 Race Report
For the second time this season – both times at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California – the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki squad came away with a dominating 1-2 finish at a Monster Energy/AMA Supercross Championship event.
Team rider Jake Weimer won the series opener at Anaheim, and then followed that up with another win in San Francisco the week before last weekend’s third Anaheim race. At Anaheim III, Weimer started near the front, passed for the lead at about the halfway point, and then fought off his teammate Ryan Morais for the win – his second in a row, and third of the year.
“It was tough,” Weimer said. “The track was really slick and got really rough and it was really rutty, so it was tough. You could get in a rhythm, but it was really easy to make mistakes, so it was really tough and a really hard race tonight, so I’m super-happy to be able to come away with the W, and the points lead.”
His teammate Morais came from behind to grab second just past the mid point of the race, and on the last lap, he actually passed Weimer for the lead momentarily a couple of turns before the finish when Weimer got pushed out of the racing line by a lapper who was attempting to move out of his way, and Morais nearly snagged his first win.
“The main event was awesome,” Morais said. “I started out front, and I rode like I don’t know what those first few laps. I was kind of jumping around, left, right, facing stuff... I don’t know what I was doing, but I was able to regroup and put the charge on and catch back up to my teammate on that last lap. That white flag came out of nowhere – I didn’t know where I was at in the race. I thought we had at least a couple more laps to go, and then the white flag came out, and I was freaking out, so I just put the charge on that last lap, and he wasn’t able to jump the double that last lap with the lapper, and I just thought to myself, ‘I’m going for it. I want to win, and if I end up going down, I know we have a big enough cushion that I can probably get up and still get second, so I’m going to take this chance and see what happens.’ It was so close to working out! But there’s no one else I’d rather see win out there than Jake. Our Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki team just works so hard during the week, and they put so much into us, and I think they kind of went out on a limb with me and Jake, and people were kind of doubting us. I just love it when we go out there and prove everybody wrong.”
Weimer now leads the Lites West points standings with three rounds remaining, while Morais still sits third in the points. The Lites West returns to action at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California, this Saturday, February 14, after which the West region will go on hiatus as the East picks back up.
