CDR Rockstar Yamaha rider Jay Marmont topped heavy favorite Chad Reed in the semi final of the first "man on man" race format at the second-to-last round of the Australasian Super X Series in Townsville, Australia. The race took place in diificult weather, as "a crazy tropical rain" and the the biggest upset of the season Down Under left the 10,000 fans with their money's worth, according to the series site www.superx.com.au.
"The man on man format carried out in the Open class final ran off a similar draw to a tennis grand slam, which pitted two riders against each other in a series of two lap races with heats, quarter finals, semi finals and the final," the site explained. Visiting superstar Jeremy McGrath finished fourth after being upset in his own match race with Daniel McCoy, who would eventually take second. The fans were then treated to a Reed-vs.-McGrath showdown -- that a total of nine AMA Supercross Championships between them -- but it was only for third-lace honors. Reed ended up the winner.
