AMA Toyota MX Returns to Budds Creek

  • AMA Toyota MX Returns to Budds Creek

BUDDS CREEK, Md. (July 2, 2008) – Budds Creek Motocross Park prepares for round seven of the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship Presented by FMF as the world’s top motocross riders make their first July visit to the famed Southern Maryland race facility. Nearly a full month beyond its typical race weekend date in mid June, the Monster Energy Budds Creek Motocross National will begin the final half of the 12-race season.

Since becoming a staple of the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship in 1989, Budds Creek has served as host to some of the most memorable moments in the sports history. In addition to Team USA taking the overall honors in the Motocross of Nations a year ago, fans at last season’s AMA Toyota Motocross Championship event saw Ricky Carmichael earn his 100th career AMA Motocross win, the closing chapter of his eight-year reign at the track.

This season, track owner and promoter Jonathan Beasley has prepared a challenging and technical layout for the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship competitors. For the first time in three years, the race will be run in a counterclockwise direction. On the inaugural occasion of this format, the legendary Doug Henry made his triumphant return from a broken back.

Current AMA Motocross points leader, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s James Stewart, is a perfect 10-0 in motos this season, with five overall victories. Making the historic run at a perfect season, Stewart is en route to accomplishing a feat that only Carmichael has achieved, which would place him in the upper echelon of all-time great riders.

In AMA Motocross Lites, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto holds an undefeated mark of his own at Budds Creek. The two-time defending event champion kept his flawless streak intact at the Motocross of Nations, leading the United States to victory. Currently sitting atop the points this season, he will shoot for a third-straight overall victory on July 12-13.

A full slate of amateur action is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, while the band Ten Man Push brings the house down Saturday night at 7 p.m., and warms up the crowd Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. For fans watching at home, SPEED will present its second same-day coverage telecast of the season at 10 p.m. ET on July 13.
