Moto XXX Tamer Motocross Round 2 Race Report

Rancho Cordova, CA. 06/01/08 - After an overcast and cool first round of the AMA Motocross Championship the teams and fans welcomed the sunny and warm Northern California weather as the 40th Honda Hangtown Classic took place at the storied Hangtown motocross track in Rancho Cordova, California.

Coming off a strong finish at Glen Helen, Antonio Balbi Jr. again led the team into the first moto of the day with a top 20 qualifying time. Balbi’s teammate, Mitch Dougherty, followed with a 26th fastest time.

As the 40 rider pack got underway in the first Motocross moto of the day Antonio Balbi was fighting his way through the middle of the pack while Mitch Dougherty looked for an opening to try and move up from a 30th place start. After sliding back a few spots during the first half of the race, Balbi picked up the pace towards the end of the moto and was able to work his way back into the points with a 20th place finish. Dougherty rode a consistent race eventually improving his position to 28th by the end of the race.

The second moto of the day did not start off as well as the first for Balbi as he found himself tangled with other riders and finally getting underway in 28th place. Dougherty did not fair any better as he completed the first lap in 36th place. Balbi quickly began picking off riders and had just cracked into the top 20 when a flat rear tire caused him to slow and eventually relegated him back to 36th at the moto’s end. Dougherty was able to string some quick laps together and in the end crossed the line in 32nd place.

This coming weekend the series heads east to the Lone Star State of Texas for the third round of the series at Freestone County Raceway. The Freestone track is located just south of Dallas and in only its second year in existence this national event is quickly becoming a fan favorite. So be sure to get the sunscreen ready as the hot Texas sun is sure to provide some excellent racing. See you there!
