  • Historic Week For Cobra CX65 @ Lake Whitney

Cobra’s Michael Young wins the first ever national MX championship on the new CX65 while Cobras also sweep all the major 50cc class titles

HILLSDALE, Mich., (March 18, 2008) – HUGE news out of Texas this weekend as Factory Cobra’s Michael Young (Concord, N.C.) became the first racer in American motocross racing history to win a major 65cc class amateur motocross championship on an American-made motorcycle - this past weekend winning the 65cc 7-9 Modified class at Lake Whitney.

Cobra CX65s are 1-2-3 out of the gate in a Lake Whitney. (From L to  R): #89 Michael Young, #214 Austin Forkner and #27 Bradley Esper

And if that wasn’t enough, Cobra-mounted racers swept 1st place in all three major 50cc class classes, giving Cobra four outright titles at Lake Whitney.

“I can’t begin to tell you how pleased we are here at Cobra,” said Cobra President Sean Hilbert. “The work associated with the CX65 project the last couple years bordered on obsession for us. And when word came back that Michael had won 65cc 7-9 Modified class – with only a couple modifications to be honest – we couldn’t contain ourselves.

“In fact, I was so pumped I drove down to Texas today to watch this week’s racing at Oak Hill (32nd annual GNC International Motocross Final). Part of me still can’t believe the bike we designed from the ground up won its first national competition after debuting in Texas this time last year. Unreal.”

Also making the podium on the CX65 in the 65cc 7-9 Stock class was Austin Forkner (Richards, Mo.) who placed 3rd. All totaled, every rider on both the 65cc 7-9 Stock and Modified class podiums were either on a Cobra or raced one in the past.

In the 51cc Open class at Lake Whitney Cobra’s Tanner Stack (Oak Grove, Mo.) was victorious, as was Sean Cantrell (Newbury Park, Calif.) in the 51cc 7-8 Stock class and Lance Kobush (New Florence, Mo.) in the 51cc 4-6 Stock class.

“Again, congratulations to all the Cobra racers who stepped up and made the trek to Lake Whitney to race,” said Hilbert. “And to Michael Young and his dad – an ice cream on me this week at Oak Hill! Man, what a great feeling.”
