Celebrities Help Toys For Tots Kickoff at Indoor Kart Track

Former AMA Supercross Champ Chad Reed won the first-ever Mary Moates Memorial event at Pole Position Raceway in Corona, California on December 2. It was all part of a celebrity-filled toy drive kickoff for the USMC’s Toys For Tots program. “I really wanted to do this for Marty,” said David Barrett who helped organize the race. “He was the type of guy who would do anything for kids, and I thought it would be fitting to name the race in his honor.” Moates, who passed away last December, is most-remembered as the winner of the 1980 U.S. GP at the famed Carlsbad Raceway. Reed spent most of the 16-lap race battling with pro hillclimber Bret Peterson. Peterson led until the very last lap when Reed made a more on the inside of a 180-degree right hand turn.

“That was one of the funnest races I’ve ever had in a kart,” said Reed. “It was a great race and there were a lot of people cheering us on. I never thought it would be that close!”

“I knew it was only a matter of time before he got me,” said Peterson. “I knew he was just a few feet behind me, and I knew I couldn’t afford to make any mistakes. It was a clean race and it’s all for a great cause.”

Peterson’s brother Robie, the reigning Hillclimb World Champ, finished fourth ahead of Mike Metzger and land speed record holder Paul Livingston.
