Denver and Louisville Arenacross Preview
Championship Heats up between Robbie Reynard, Danny Smith, Chad Johnson & the Johnson Brothers (Kevin & Keith)
AURORA, Ill., (Jan. 23, 2007) – With another split schedule weekend on the 2006-’07 Toyota AMA Arenacross Series tour, it’s going to be interesting to see where the top racers will end up as the points chase is beginning to flow into a bottleneck where one weekend could make the difference between the overall podium and sixth place.
This weekend (Jan. 26-28) the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series will be in two separate time zones, making stops in Denver (Coliseum) and Louisville, Ky., (Broadbent Arena) as the hunt for the title continues.
Leading the series, as he has since the opening round in Des Moines (Iowa), is TUF Racing/Honda’s Danny Smith. The Idaho native was back on the podium this past Friday night in Dayton (Ohio), finishing third overall. Chipping away at Smith’s AMA Arenacross class lead is defending series champion, Chad Johnson (Junior Jackson Racing/Suzuki). With 4th and 2nd place finishes at Dayton, Johnson cut Smith’s lead down to 13 points.
Even more concern for those two should be the racing of Oklahoma’s Robbie Reynard (Reynard Modifications/Honda). Last weekend Reynard was the top dog at Dayton, winning on Friday night and finishing second on Saturday to pull within 20 points of Chad Johnson.
“Reynard was on it this past weekend,” said Robert Hansen, director of arenacross for Live Nation. “The racing has heated up to a point where we could have a three, possibly a four-way battle for the title heading down to the last race in Nashville (Tenn., Feb. 16-18) when you take into consideration Keith and Kevin Johnson as well.”
