Washington native wins the Anaheim, Calif., opener going away; teammate Christophe Pourcel’s on the podium as well in 2nd place
CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 7, 2006) – Monster Energy’s top young motocross prospect, Ryan Villopoto, got things rolling nicely this past weekend at Anaheim’s (Calif.) Angels Stadium, winning the opening AMA Lites class round of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series aboard his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki KX250F.
Villopoto’s performance was stellar, taking the lead from teammate Christophe Pourcel on the second lap and never looking back – en route to his first AMA Lites class win of the season.
“I was a little nervous at first because it’s the first race, but I got that out of the way in my heat race and rode pretty well in the main,” said Villopoto.
Replays of Villopoto’s pass of Pourcel showed that it was clean, even though one angle made it look a bit aggressive. “We had some contact and I couldn’t help it,” said Villopoto. “I rode across his line, but that’s racing. Luckily I didn’t go down.”
Pourcel, the defending MX2 class GP champion, held on as well, taking an impressive second place over a charging Jason Lawrence in his first American supercross as a pro.
Also racing well for Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki was Chris Gosselaar. The Californian pulled a real good start (4th) and wound up finishing 8th overall.
Next up for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team is Round Two of the 2007 Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series at Phoenix’s Bank One Ballpark.
