The annual pilgrimage to the hallowed grounds of Loretta Lynn's Ranch has begun. The lifeblood of our sport is represented in the dreams and hopes of the next generation of riders that have earned their spot to compete next week in the 25th Anniversary Air Nautiques/AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship. There are no free rides or exemptions to this dance as everyone goes through the same qualifying gut-check throughout the country as the entry list is chiseled down to the elite in each class.
Over 23,000 entries attempted to qualify in 33 classes this year. The riders that made it will have to contend with not only a 3-moto format and the best riders in the country, but also Mother Nature. ( What is the deal with old Mother Nature anyway? Nature may be our mother of sorts, but that bitch can certainly wreak some havoc as well, and will certainly be heard from next week in one way or another. Thanks a ton, Mom!) If you have never been part of the pilgrimage before, I urge you to go at least once in your life. I assure you that all the best things about our sport are represented. The racing is awesome, the venue is perfect, and the next generation of stars are born.
There was a time long ago in a galaxy far, far away where a relatively
unknown rider could fly in under the radar and possibly win a championship at Loretta's, but those days are long gone. These kids are scouted and groomed from shaft-drive on up and this year's crop is no different. If you have never heard of these kids, you soon will. We welcome some of the stars in amateur racing on tonight: Sean "Chainsaw" Hackley, Ryan "Factory Suzuki" Dungey, Austin "Texas" Stroupe, Jimmy "Fat" Albertson, Matt "Boner" Boni, and the legend himself, Kevin "Sky" Walker. Jason "Fried Twinkie" Weigandt will be on to help us sort out the incredible battles and classes for next week. You can check out www.mxsports.com for a complete list of riders that qualified and all things related to LL's.
WWR welcomes on the popular Doug Dehaan the Most Improved Privateer from Colorado. Doug will receive a $500.00 check for his efforts. Also, Dana Kellstrom and Darrell Saldana will join us to talk about the new Dana K / WWR / DeCal Works Internship Program for the 2007 season. Power to the Privateers!
