Subaru Rally Team USA In Command At The 100 Acre Wood Rally
X-Games
star and burgeoning rally driver Travis Pastrana is the early leader
after Day 1 of the 100 Acre Wood Rally, driving his 2006 Subaru WRX
STI. Pastrana's friend and Subaru Rally Team USA teammate,
Ken Block is only nine seconds behind in 2nd Overall. The duo now
leads Round 2 of the 2006 Rally America National Championship in
commanding fashion and look forward to a possible maiden victory after
Day 2. The 100 Acre Wood rally takes place over two days, covering more
than 100 miles of challenging dirt and gravel roads near the Mark Twain
National Forest.
The two Subaru Rally Team USA drivers have pulled away from the rest of the competition, having amassed more than a one minute lead over 3rd place and the rest of fifty plus car field. Their biggest competition thus far has been each other. "Any day that I beat Travis Pastrana on a few stages is a good day!" said a happy Ken Block. "The car felt great, the roads were fun, and Travis and I are enjoying a nice fight at the top of the leader board."
Block and his co-driver Alex Gelsomino took the early lead in the
rally by winning the first two stages and tying Pastrana on the third.
But the 22 year old Pastrana and his co-driver Christian Edstrom
battled back later in the evening, winning three of the final four
stages of the day. "We pushed a bit harder on the final two stages and took the lead from Ken but I'm sure Ken will fight back tomorrow," explained Pastrana. "We have new Ohlins dampers on the cars at this rally and we definitely tested them out on some of the huge jumps out there, but from what the TV crews told me Ken went even bigger than I did!"
Day 2 of the 100 Acre Wood Rally begins early Saturday morning and will cover nearly double the miles run on Day 1. Weather conditions have been perfect thus far, with partly sunny skies and comfortable temperatures. Road conditions are generally smooth and fast but some dust and slippery pea size gravel off the racing line will force the drivers to drive clean and carefully.
Subaru Rally Team USA has a busy schedule ahead of them, as the team will fly straight to the Corona Rally Mexico, Round 3 of the World Rally Championship as soon as the 100 Acre Wood Rally concludes. Both Pastrana and Block along with their co-drivers will perform reconnaissance of the route in order to prepare for a 2007 entry at the Corona Rally Mexico as well as other WRC rounds.
