Moto XXX Anaheim 1 Report
Moto XXX Escapes Disaster and Finishes Well at AMA Supercross Opener
Less than a half of a lap into the new AMA Supercross season, Team
Unbound Energy/Moto XXX was strapped in and going full speed on an
emotional rollercoaster. In the very first heat race of 2006, Kyle
Lewis and Timmy Ferry entered the first turn in the number one and two
spots respectively. Unfortunately, things unraveled quickly. Sort of.
The third turn of the Anaheim 1 track sent riders into one of the most
ferocious whoop sections seen on a race track in quite a while. The
teammates had a host of factory stars behind them as they began
negotiating the waste-deep moguls. Things looked good for both until
about halfway through the section, where Ferry missed one. His front
wheel dove, the rear came up and he went over the bars and into the
dirt rodeo style. He jumped back up quickly, but couldn’t get his bike
turned around until the entire pack had run away. Lewis on the other
hand, continued to battle. By the end of the 8-lap heat, he held onto
fourth place and transferred directly into the main event.
Ferry’s fans felt a collective stomach pain when they realized he
hadn’t lined up for his semi-final qualifier. The reason, as many
feared, was an injury. “Red Dog” had hurt one of his thumbs and gone to
the Asterisk Mobile Medical Center for evaluation right after the heat
race. The helpful crew there performed X-Rays, which were fortunately
negative. Nothing appeared to be broken, but Timmy and the team decided
to play it safe and have him sit the rest of the night out. At this
time, he plans to rest the hand this week and pick back up at round 2
in Phoenix this coming weekend, which is welcome news for his team and
fans alike.
The unfortunate fall of Ferry left Lewis to represent on his own in the
main event. “Lucky” did just that by taking yet another Holeshot Award,
beating the entire field to the first turn. He spent the next 20 laps
battling with the superstars of the sport and ultimately finished 13th,
right behind the factory guys and ahead of most privateers. Not bad for
a guy who was trying to fight off sickness all week.
When Ferry returns in Phoenix, the team will be two thirds complete.
2005 AMA Rookie of the Year, Juss Laansoo will be the only member
missing as he recovers from a broken collarbone. There’s good news on
that front as well, though. “Juice” has already gotten back on the bike
and will make his Supercross debut soon—possibly as early as round 3 in
Anaheim.
