Team WBR Suzuki enlists Todd Jacobs as Team Trainer
December 1, 2005, 2:22pm
Team WBR Suzuki owner Brad Williams recently announced the appointment
of Travis Pastrana's former trainer, Todd Jacobs, to prepare the
three-man WBR motocross team.
Todd Jacobs has never raced a motorcycle but knows what makes winners. His pedigree includes training superstars Jeremy McGrath, Travis Pastrana, Broc Hepler and Ernesto Fonseca. "Training is the last frontier in motorcycle racing," Jacobs says, "The actual bike gets ten times more attention than the rider. My job is to pay attention to the human engine."
Jacobs is well versed in the mental as well as physical aspects of training. Coming from a background as world class Ironman triathlete, he knows firsthand the meaning of winning, losing and survival. From Jacobs' perspective, this type of extreme competition is less about the physical readiness and more about the mental. "Most of my work is from the neck up," he explains, "It is what you do with them upstairs that will make them great. It's very much mental - attitude and thoughts create reality."
Jacobs joins his old friend and co-triathlete David Bailey in what is becoming quite a stable of training and riding talent. Jacobs has been working with the team unofficially since the end of last season and sees a huge improvement in the riders leading into the 2006 campaign. Most of this he attributes to emotional growth and maturity.
Williams and his team are starting the season with a veteran training staff, two seasoned riders in Ryan Sipes and Ryan Morias and a talented rookie - Michael LaPaglia. A lot of people will be watching as this team is on the move.
