Morgantown, W.Va - The final step in qualifying for the 36th Annual Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented by Lucas Oil, begins this weekend in three regions across the United States. Amateur racers in the Southeast, South Central, and Northwest will continue their quest to compete in the world's largest and most prestigious amateur motocross race at the iconic Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.
Washougal Motocross in Washington will play host to the Northwest youth and amateur Regional Championship this weekend, May 27 and 28. In addition, Underground MX Park in Kemp, Texas and Florida's Gatorback Cycle Park will also have youth Regional Championships this weekend. These three events kick off the 13 total Regional Championships which take place in eight regions around the United States.
"Over 20,000 attempts to qualify at the Area Qualifiers ensures full gates at our Regional Championships," said MX Sports director Tim Cotter. "This phase of the qualifying process is perhaps the most significant in the program. Over the next several weeks nearly 9,000 competitors will attempt to punch their ticket to the National Championship. We wish all of the athletes luck in their journey."
The Regional Championships serve as the final step in seeding riders for the world's largest and most prestigious amateur motocross championship. The first Regional Championships begin this weekend and will continue every weekend until June 24-25. Only riders who finish in a qualifying position at a Regional Championship are eligible to race the AMA Amateur National the week of July 31-August 5.
"The Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Amateur National Motocross Championship is the most coveted championship in amateur motocross," said AMA Motocross manager Kip Bigelow. "As racers advance from area qualifiers to one of eight regional championships, they will become one step closer to competing for an AMA National #1 plate at Loretta Lynn's Ranch this fall."
Each racer participating in the Regional Championships must pre-register in order to reserve their gate position. Each racer who registers for a Regional Championship will receive a $20 Rocky Mountain ATV/MC gift card as part of the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Race Gas Fast Track program.
"The Regional Championships are a major step on the road to Loretta's," said Dan Thomas, CEO and founder of Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. "As the title sponsor, we want to congratulate every rider on making it this far, and we wish them the best of luck as they compete to qualify for the National Championship."
