The 51FIFTY Energy Drink Yamaha team will be absent from the final round of the Monster Energy Supercross Championship this weekend in Las Vegas as team riders Hayden Mellross and Zach Bell continue to recovery from injury.
Mellross is still recovering from a spectacular crash in Santa Clara—the last 250SX West Region event—after he cased his rear wheel on the face of a landing which threw his body weight off heading into a bowl corner. Mellross couldn’t get to his brakes in time, and he went flying through the air and came down stomach first on an iron fence by the start gate.
“The first thing I said to myself was ‘Get me a doctor’,” Mellross told us in April. “I wasn’t in pain, but I was a bit in shock.”
After having scans throughout the following week after his crash, doctors found a hairline fracture in his L3 vertebra. Mellross told us that it’s been an ongoing injury that he originally hurt before the supercross season began.
Zach Bell has been out since contracting a bacterial infection after having surgery to repair a broken collarbone suffered in Oakland. Bell recently said on Twitter that he’s only about 40 percent healed.
