450SX
- He didn’t need to win to capture the championship, he did that a week prior in Salt Lake City, but Ryan Villopoto decided to go out and grab his tenth win of the season anyway. He also set the fastest lap of the night with a 1:04.358 on lap nine.
- STREAKING: RV set a blistering pace early, setting six of seven laps under 1:05 during the span of laps five through eleven.
- Ryan Dungey wasn’t far of the pace, setting twelve straight laps (4-15) under 1:06.
- Davi Millsaps, who was still engaged in a battle for second, was also quick in Vegas, setting eleven straight laps (3-13) under 1:07.
- It’s been a long, tough year for Jake Weimer, but he finally broke out of his slump in Vegas en route to fourth. Weimer started the race on fire, setting thirteen straight laps under 1:08.

250SX East
- Following a slow start, Marvin Musquin put in the charge of his life trying to secure his first career 250SX title. Although his efforts would prove futile, Musquin left everything on the table, which is validated by his best lap (1:06.042), which, set on the final lap, was the fastest lap set in the Eastern Regional 250SX main.
- Knowing his points lead would evaporate with a win from Musquin, eventual title winner Wil Hahn was also dropping the hammer late in the race, setting a 1:06.837 on lap fourteen, the second-fastest lap.
- Musquin wasn’t the only rider to get off to a slow start, as Hahn wasn’t setting the world ablaze in the early goings either. In fact, two of his three slowest laps came on the first two laps, with both laps coming in at over 1:09. In contrast, both lap thirteen and fourteen came in under 1:07.
- Race winner Tyler Bowers would join Hahn and Musquin as the only three riders to drop below the 1:07 mark.
- Bowers was on fire early, setting his first eight laps under 1:08. In comparison, only five of Musquin’s first eight were under 1:08, while Hahn came in with six of his first eight under 1:08.
Comparison:
Tyler Bowers vs. Marvin Musquin (laps 11-15)
As mentioned above, Musquin gave it everything he had down the stretch in an effort to claim his first title. Let’s compare his final laps to race leader Tyler Bowers’.
Lap | Tyler Bowers | Marvin Musquin |
11 | 1.07.674 | 1.06.566 |
12 | 1.08.221 | 1.06.606 |
13 | 1.07.442 | 1.06.546 |
14 | 1.07.400 | 1.06.251 |
15 | 1.08.898 | 1.06.042 |
As the chart clearly shows, Musquin was on another level, setting five straight laps under 1:07 to end the race. Bowers, a three-time Arenacross champion, relied upon his championship experience to avoid the “big” mistake and toss it away. With that said, his pace late was right around his pace early, so you have to credit Musquin for turning it up a notch down the stretch.
Eli Tomac set the second fastest lap of the night.

250SX West
- Eli Tomac came up short in his bid for a second consecutive Western Regional 250SX Championship, but he did set the second-fastest lap (250/450 combined) of the night with a 1:04.527. Tomac was only bested by Ryan Villopoto’s 1:04.358. Tomac was also the only 250SX rider to set a lap under 1:05.
- Tomac’s fastest lap was nearly two seconds faster Musquin’s fastest lap (1:06.042).
- After a slow beginning, Tomac really hammered down and made a charge. Upon kicking it into another gear on lap four,Tomac’s next thirteen laps were all under 1:06.
- Martin Davalos, who is still in search of his first career 250SX win, jumped out to an early lead, thanks in part to setting ten straight laps under 1:06 to begin the race.
- Ken Roczen, who claimed his first title in America on Saturday, set twelve of his first thirteen laps under 1:07 to begin the race.
- Kyle Cunningham, who always seems to shine brightly in Sin City, set thirteen straight laps under 1:08 to end the race—including the latest fastest lap with a 1:05.762 on lap twelve.
Comparison:
Eli Tomac vs. Ken Roczen vs. Martin Davalos
A lot of chatter has surrounded Davalos and his inability to hold onto huge leads late in the race. Did he falter or were Tomac and Roczen just on another level. Let’s take a look.
Lap | Eli Tomac | Ken Roczen | Martin Davalos |
2 | 1.09.704 | 1.07.478 | 1.06.000 |
3 | 1.06.726 | 1.06.463 | 1.06.147 |
4 | 1.06.175 | 1.06.432 | 1.06.111 |
5 | 1.05.812 | 1.05.649 | 1.05.779 |
6 | 1.05.946 | 1.06.328 | 1.06.111 |
11 | 1.04.527 | 1.05.804 | 1.06.795 |
12 | 1.05.009 | 1.05.878 | 1.07.980 |
13 | 1.05.968 | 1.06.452 | 1.06.958 |
14 | 1.05.758 | 1.06.697 | 1.08.440 |
15 | 1.07.850 | 1.06.960 | 1.07.789 |
Davalos was much faster at the beginning of the race, but it’s telling that his pace dropped significantly on three of the final five laps. But what is even more telling is the pace Tomac was setting—no one was touching that guy. As you can see, Roczen stepped it up a notch as well, but nowhere near the level of Tomac.
Ken Roczen had the fastest lap in the Shootout.
