  • Nick Wey & MDK/KTM Open Up With Top Ten Finish @ A1

Solid finish for the first year KTM racer has him pumped up and eager to move up; effort is believed to be KTM’s first-ever top ten SX finish on the KTM 450SX bike

CARLSBAD, Calif., (Jan. 8, 2008) – Team MDK/KTM’s Nick Wey nailed a top ten finish on his first-ever race aboard the factory KTM 450SX, placing 9th at the opening round of 2008 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, at Anaheim’s (Calif.) Angels Stadium.

And, in the process, Wey may have made some history in that it’s believed – but not yet ‘officially’ confirmed – that his 9th place finish at Anaheim in the premier AMA Supercross class was the first-ever top ten finish for the KTM 450SX bike.

“Yeah, if it’s the case that’d be pretty cool,” said Wey of his possible historic ride. “Now I’ll have to be the first guy to shoot for the podium on the KTM 450SX.”

History aside, Wey looked solid in his first effort on the MDK/KTM. Finishing 7th in his heat race to transfer to the main, Wey uncorked a killer start and dive bombed his KTM tight into the first turn – avoiding trouble – and racing away with the lead pack in 5th place after the first lap.

Things were going well until a bit of a sketch on lap 11 cost Wey a handful of spots, which he continued to chip away at until he made his way back into the top ten.

“We were looking at a top five, and my MDK/KTM was easily capable of that, but a slight error on my behalf midway through the race would end up costing us,” said Wey. “We’ll run it back this weekend in Phoenix and work to continue on what looks like a historic year for the KTM 450SX.” On deck for Wey and MDK/KTM: Phoenix (Jan. 12)

Also stepping up to back Wey this year, along with MSR and KTM, are a number of high level sponsors including: Spy Optic, Oxtar, Vans and Bell.
