“Reedy” shows up and shines in his first AMA MX National event of the summer – a prequel to this fall’s MX Des Nations @ Budds Creek
CORONA, Calif., (June 18, 2007) – Former Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series champion Chad Reed (Unbound Energy/San Manuel Yamaha), who’s taking the summer off Outdoor National motocross competition here in the States in order to focus on his 2008 AMA Supercross campaign, showed he’s still got all the talent necessary to podium in the hotly-contested summer series, placing 3rd this past weekend at Budds Creek, Md.
Reed, who was 6th the overall in the AMA Toyota Motocross Championships last year, has historically done well at Budds Creek MX Park (2nd in ’06). This past weekend Reed, who’s been spending time in his native Australia this summer, stepped up in the pre-race practice sessions and put down some of the weekend’s best times.
“I really didn’t know what to expect until I got out there and started charging a bit in practice,” said Reed. “I like the Budds Creek track and have always felt comfortable here, so that helped in getting back into Nationals race form quickly.”
Reed opened Sunday’s racing with a rippin’ start, getting out in 3rd place and running up front early with race leaders James Stewart and Ricky Carmichael. Reed would then settle into his own fast pace and distance himself from the rest of the field to take a solid podium 3rd in the first moto, more than two seconds ahead of friendly rival Tim Ferry.
In the 2nd moto Reed got held up early and came around after the first lap of Budds in a very un-Reed like 15th place. Far from content, Reed put his head down and gunned his YZ450F, picking off rider after rider until he’d made it all the way back to 4th place, giving him 3rd place overall on the afternoon.
“That second moto was a blast,” said Reed. “Even though there was no pressure in terms of a title chase, I felt that it was necessary to pull out all the stops in order to make the podium. We’ll be racing the Moto Des Nations here this fall and anything can happen at that race. So knowing I have the ability to come from back in the pack to make the podium will be helpful.”
