Monster Energy’s Carmichael Gets 100th Career Win

  • Monster Energy’s Carmichael Gets 100th Career Win
Carmichael remains undefeated on his farewell tour with planned final race of the summer coming up July 1st @ RedBud (Buchanan, Mich.)

CORONA, Calif., (June 18, 2007) – Monster Energy-backed Ricky Carmichael (Makita/Suzuki) made it four overall wins in a row in four events on the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship tour, this past weekend pursuing and catching fellow Monster Energy-backed racer James Stewart to take the overall title at Budds Creek (Md.) on Sunday – the 100th win of RC’s illustrious career.

“I hope everybody back at Monster HQ’s as pumped as I am today,” said Carmichael after the race. “This one wasn’t easy. James got me on both starts, but fortunately I was able to catch him in the second moto for the overall. Thanks again to everybody at Monster for their support. Now it’s off to RedBud for the second round of the Monster Triple Crown of Motocross.”

Carmichael and Stewart’s battles this summer have been reminiscent of some of the all-time greatest one-on-one sports rivalries, akin to Ali/Frazier, Nicklaus/Palmer and Borg/McEnroe.

“It too bad for the fans it has to come to an end, but these first four races have sure been classics in terms of historic motocross rivalries over the years,” said Monster spokesman Scott Sepkovic. “That said, if you haven’t got plans to attend the Monster Energy/Kawasaki National at RedBud July 1st, I’d pull out all the stops to get there. That’s going to be one heck of a final National for Monster’s Carmichael.”

In the opening moto at Budds Creek on Sunday Stewart got out to the early lead, with Carmichael in hot pursuit. A couple minor mistakes by Carmichael would allow Stewart the win, although Carmichael’s fastest lap time topped Stewart’s by nearly three-quarters of a second – a testament to how hard Carmichael was dogging the heir apparent to his MX throne and foreshadowing what was to be a thoroughly exciting second moto.

In the second moto Stewart again shot out to the early lead, with Carmichael in hot pursuit. The two had the legions of eastern U.S. fans that flocked to Budds Creek on their feet for the entire moto, with Carmichael finally catching Stewart on lap 12 (of 17) and making the lead stick for good – with which came the overall win. Carmichael’s best lap time again topped Stewart’s, 2:01.180 to 2:01.491.

Carmichael is undefeated in overall finishes through four rounds of the Nationals, winning all but two motos (six of eight). He leads Stewart by 16 points (194-178) for the overall title, which gives Monster the 1-2 points lead riders in both the AMA Motocross and AMA Motocross Lites standings (Monster/PC/Kawi’s Ryan Villopoto & Ben Townley in the Lites class).

Next up for the Monster Energy’s Carmichael is the July 1st Monster Energy/Kawasaki RedBud National, presented by Concept Haulers, Round Five of the 2007 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship
