  • MXHeaven Race Report: Southwick

Sandy Southwick shows the Swedes many different faces.

Perris CA. - The MXHeaven team approached the sandy Southwick track with great anticipation. After all, both Calle Aspegren and Fredrik Noren had lots of experience from similar tracks both in Sweden and Europe.

Or so they thought.

It started during timed practice and qualifying, where group B, the less experienced riders were first out.

The track was perfectly groomed and smooth as glass for this group and it turned out that indeed  many of the fastest times were set during this session, including the pole position.

“The track deteriorated very quickly and it did not become clear to us in group A that the longer we waited to put in our best time, the harder it would be to qualify for the race.”  said Calle Aspegren afterwards.  As a result of  this, Fred was listed as 41st and Calle 61st , neither of them  qualifying for the race.

But when Christian Craig had to withdraw due to injury, it became Fred’s opportunity and he was the  last rider to line up for the first race. After a start around 25th place he showed good speed and advanced to 16th when he fell and ended up in 22nd place, out of the points.

Just as the second race was about to start, tropical storm Irene made a visit and completely drenched the track. Fred made a super start and was among the top 5 into the first corner but was taken wide  and completed the first lap in 16th place. He found the tough going to his liking and advanced to 14th, but the conditions were such that it was difficult to maintain a steady pace and after a chaotic race he ended up in 16th place, earning 5 valuable points and a lot of experience along the way.

The MXHeaven Team plans to stay and practice in upstate New York this week in order to attack next week’s  Steel  City race with a vengeance.
