Star Racing A2 Race Report
Anaheim, CA. - The AMA Supercross Series visited Angel Stadium on a very bright and sunny day for the second and last time this season. In front of 45,050 fans DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing/Yamaha’s #35 Kyle Cunningham and #72 Nick Paluzzi came in optimistic, upbeat, all the while knowing they had good chances of stepping on to the podium. Preliminary action got underway in good fashion as Cunningham stood high up in the charts at 4th and the rookie Paluzzi clocked the 15th fastest Timed-qualifying lap.
The gate dropped for the first Heat race, seeing Cunningham jump out in front of the field. The combination of spot on timing and making use of his sheer speed allowed the FMF backed rider to ease out to a comfortable lead. For the next five laps, Kyle laid down some of the fastest times and etched in his name as a heat race winner. Up next in Heat race two, Paluzzi got out to a decent start near the top contenders with one lap down. In the next few laps Paluzzi showed speed and settled in right outside the top five and went on to finish out 6th.
Moving to the Main Event, Cunningham didn’t get out to the front running start with the leaders like he needed to. Running in 8th Cunningham moved to sixth inside of the first three laps, making sure he was in contention as best he could. Now looking ahead and riding to get a consistent race under his belt, Cunningham would continue throughout the majority of the race to attempt to pick his way past the fifth spot. Never willing to settle, the #35 machine would make the pass to 5th on lap eleven. From there a gap had accumulated to move forward anymore, so a podium finish would be put on hold for another night. The other Star Racing team rider had a rough go of things, Paluzzi rounded lap one in 14th, but moved to 11th by the halfway mark. Unfortunately a crash at this point took him out of the race all together.
