5 Minutes with...Jimmy Albertson
April 7, 2010, 5:43pm
Jimmy Albertson is national #34 for 2010 here in the States, but the Missouri native is currently overseas wearing #702 racing Grand Prix motocross for the Honda Martin Racing team. This past weekend at the opening round of the series, Jimmy posted 16-20 moto scores, which were well below his expectations. We touched base with him today for this short interview.
Racer X: So, how nervous were you going into the first GP of the year, Jimmy?
Jimmy Albertson: To tell you the truth I really wasn't that nervous until I got on the track in the first practice. I rode terrible in that practice and I kind of let it set the tone for my whole weekend.
What are the biggest differences with GP racing compared to the U.S. Nationals?
There really are no differences that are too big. The tracks get rougher, but that’s about it. It was the first round here so everyone was healthy which made the field very deep.
What surprised you the most?
My biggest surprise of the weekend was the way I rode. There is no excuse to the way I performed. I just felt like I couldn't do anything right all day. I don't think I could have even got top ten in the WMX class!
How was the track?
The track was awesome. They did a really good job preparing and it got super rough!
How was your bike and team?
My bike and the whole team are great. The team is working on some things with the bike this week in the power department, but other than that my bike is spot on. The team also was very supportive of me. All of them were trying very hard to cheer me up after the race because I was so down on myself. They all have been watching me ride leading up to this and could see that I was not riding anywhere near my abilities. I wanted to make it happen so bad that I think I pushed it away. I just need to ride like myself and not worry about trying to be the fastest.
Goal for Round 2 in Italy this week?
My goals for round two are just to ride to my full capabilities. If I can do that I will be happy and I know the team will be more than happy as well. I can't explain what happened in Bulgaria. I guess you could say it's just first round jitters. Either way, I can't expect to do well over here unless I ride to my full potential because these racers over here are no joke. They are all fast.
Who do you want to thank, Jimmy?
I would like to thank everyone over at Honda Martin Racing, my Brother Gregg, John Van den Berk, my parents, my trainer Gregg Direnzo, Shannon Niday, Dano and Matthew at DVS, and all the sponsors for Honda Martin Racing. HRC, Fox, Dunlop, Akrapovic, Airoh helmets, Renthal, Twin Air, UFO plastic, TCX Boots, and anyone who I forgot, thanks!
