  • Work Begins on Daytona Supercross Course
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – While NASCAR Sprint Cup Series star Jamie McMurray and the No. 1 Bass Pro Shops team celebrate their Daytona 500 triumph, work is underway at Daytona International Speedway as the “World Center of Racing” is transformed into a motorcycle-enthusiast paradise.

Construction has already begun on the legendary tri-oval on the Daytona Supercross By Honda course, which was designed by five-time Daytona Supercross By Honda champion Ricky Carmichael for the third consecutive year.  Mark Burnett, a three-time National champion, is once again building the course.

This year’s course layout will have a couple of new twists such as the relocation of the starting gate to the West end of the tri-oval and placement of the finish line in the center of the track closer to the fans.

The paddock for Supercross teams will also have a new location in the blue garages, which are located adjacent to the Sprint FANZONE and will provide easier accessibility for the fans.

Daytona Supercross By Honda will host the best Supercross riders in America with top names expected to compete such as three-time and defending champion Chad Reed, Kevin Windham, Ryan Dungey, Davi Millsaps and Ryan Villopoto.

They will be battling on one of the toughest and most challenging layouts of the season in an attempt to put their name alongside greats such as Bob Hannah, Jeff Stanton, Jeremy McGrath and Ricky Carmichael as winners of the Daytona Supercross By Honda.

Here’s a look at some of the numbers behind the construction of this year’s Daytona Supercross By Honda course:

3                 Number of tractors working to spread the dirt (1 loader, 1 crawler, 1 skid steer)

10              Number of dump trucks used to transport loads of dirt

38              Number of jumps on the track

175           Number of dump truck loads of dirt used to build the course on the tri-oval grass

400           Number of man-hours needed to complete the construction of the course

400           Number of 2x9 Styrofoam blocks which will be used for safety along the course

2,900        Mileage (in feet) of the Supercross course from start to finish

5,000        Tons of dirt needed to build the Supercross track
