AX Heads to Hampton Coliseum
January 19, 2010 2:54pm
AURORA, Ill. – With two rounds and four races in the books, the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series appears as though the path to the AMA Arenacross class title will have to go through one man, Babbitt’s Monster Energy/TiLube Kawasaki’s Tyler Bowers.
Last weekend, the current premier class points leader swept both nights of action inside Baltimore’s 1st Mariner Arena and has put an early-season grasp on control of the series. Teammates Chad Johnson and Josh Demuth along with Spinechillers/Storm Lake Honda’s Nathan Skaggs are in close pursuit and capable of capitalizing on any opportunity presented to them.
A deep, talented field will accompany the top four riders in the series, including reigning champion Jeff Gibson, as the AMA Arenacross Series invades Hampton, Va. and the legendary Hampton Coliseum, which is celebrating 40 years of history.
Two action-packed nights of racing will fill the arena floor and bring the Chesapeake Bay to its feet. The AMA Arenacross Series last competed in Hampton during the 2008 season. That weekend, former Babbitt’s Monster Energy Kawasaki rider Kelly Smith swept both nights of racing. Now with Jackson Performance KTM, Smith hopes a little bit of the luck he received at the Hampton Roads returns in 2010.
The AMA Arenacross Lites Eastern Regional championship continues to take shape of two of five rounds. A big weekend from Foremost Insurance Yamaha teammates Jim Neese and Tyler Bright highlighted the Baltimore round and has put Bright in the points lead after four races. However, Virginia Beach native Devon Pilkington sits just one point behind and is eager to show his hometown crowd what he is capable of and would surely like to capture his first career victory in the state of Virginia.
During the 2008 visit to the Hampton Coliseum, Bright once again stood atop the podium in the AMA Arenacross Lites class, grabbing a night two victory. Triple Effect Kawasaki’s Gray Davenport took the win on night one.
Tickets are available for this weekend’s Hampton Arenacross at the Hampton Coliseum Box Office, Ticketmaster charge by phone and ticketmaster.com. Tickets cost $2 more the day of the race.
