Race Report: Dortmund Supercross
January 11, 2010, 1:27pm
At his very first participation at Supercross Dortmund, American Kyle Chisholm wrote history last weekend, as he won all three main events, which no rider has ever achieved before in Dortmund. He dominated the weekend from Friday on and was crowned “King of Dortmund” on Sunday night in front of a sold-out Westfalen Arena. With this win, the Kawasaki rider lines up with names like Bob Moore, Broc Glover, Mike Craig, Mike Jones, Erik Kehoe, Doug Dubach, and many other Americans who took this title before him.
The track in Dortmund was pretty demanding for the riders, with challenging jump sections, a pretty long whoop section, and a sand part right after the whoops. Furthermore, the German SX teams presented some new faces to the paddock with Brandon Jesseman, Ricky Renner, Scott Champion and PJ Larsen.
Another big challenge for the riders was the 18-lap main event. With a lap time of around 28 seconds, it demanded high concentration from the riders.
But obviously this was no big deal for Chisholm, who even after a bad start made his way to the top, getting his first win on Friday in front of Jason Thomas, who for sure didn’t want to risk the loss of the ADAC SX Championship on the first day. Heath Voss, who was still the reigning “King of Dortmund,” having won the title in 2009, finished third. Voss struggled a bit during the first three rounds of the series, but was happy to be back on the podium – especially in Dortmund, where the fans remembered his immense speed of last year. Another U.S. newcomer to the series, PJ Larsen, missed the podium, but was very happy about his fantastic fourth position.
On Saturday, Larsen, the young rider from South Carolina, made it happen and finished in third position behind Chisholm and Thomas. Jason Thomas came to Dortmund with a three-point lead in the German ADAC SX series and won the Championship on Saturday with his second place behind Kyle Chisholm, since Cole Siebler, who dominated the first two rounds, didn’t make the main event on Friday nor on Saturday, and couldn’t make any further points due to an injury that he suffered at SX Munich the weekend before Christmas.
“I’m pretty disappointed to have lost the Championship, but in Munich I had a heavy crash in practice on Friday and dislocated my thumb and hurt the ligaments in my elbow badly,” Siebler said. “My arm is still so weak and I can’t hold the bike, especially in the long whoop section.”
Larsen, who won’t compete in AMA Supercross this season, having signed a deal to race in Australia, had a big smile in his face standing on the podium on his very first time in Germany.
“This is my first time in Germany and only the second time out of the country,” Larsen said “I’m happy having gotten this chance to ride here, and even happier about this podium finish today. The German Kawasaki team is great, but actually I will be on a factory KTM this season doing the Australian MX Championship, which will start in March.”
On Sunday, after two hard days of riding, the riders were challenged again for another hot racing day. The holeshot in the main event went to Portuguese rider Joaquim Rodrigues, who led the race for quite a while. Chisholm faught his way to the top, though, and pulled away. Behind him, there were some hot fights for the last spots on the podium and German supercross star Daniel Siegl went into second and held on to the finish. After about 10 years, this was the first podium place in Dortmund for a German rider. Rodrigues hung on for third place in front of PJ Larsen.
“This is absolutely amazing,” Chisholm said. “If somebody would have told me before that I would win in Dortmund, I would have thought he’s crazy. It’s a fantastic feeling to win in front of such a crowd.”
By the way, Chisholm not only won the title of being King of Dortmund, but on top of this he got a brand new Toyota Auris.
One challenge is still open: Nobody has ever won the title “King of Dortmund” twice in 27 years of the Dortmund Supercross. So maybe next year a new part of history will be written there.
Unfortunately, U.S. rider Travis Sewell had a bad crash on Friday during practice. He was rushed to hospital where a broken twelfth thoracic vertebrae was found. Luckily, there were no signs of paralysis, and according to his German team manager, no surgery was needed.
In SX 2, British rider Adam Chatfield was crowned “Prince of Dortmund” and 17-year old French rider Boris Maillard took the ADAC Championship win.
