GEICO Powersports Honda U.S. Open Report

  • GEICO Powersports Honda U.S. Open Report

Las Vegas, Nev. – The GEICO Powersports Honda team didn’t have heavy-duty plans to compete at the one-off U.S. Open of Supercross, but when 2008-2009 team member Dan Reardon expressed interest in competing, the team decided to back him for the race.

Reardon, healthy now after a summer that was largely messed up with an injured shoulder, came into the event happy and optimistic.

“My shoulder’s good, so injurywise, I felt fine,” Reardon said. “Besides a few stitches in my arm, I’m good, so my expectations were just to have a solid result. I didn’t even look at the rider list. It didn’t bother me who was here or not. I just wanted to come away from the weekend knowing that I did my best and I tried hard.”

He could easily do that. Qualifying for the main event on night one straight from the heat race, his mechanic Charlie Costanzo grabbed third in the night’s wrench race, and then Reardon headed out for the main event.

With a strong start, Reardon grabbed third in the main.

“The first night, things went pretty good,” Reardon said. “It took a while to set the bike up for the track, and then to come away third, I was pumped with that. Then [on Saturday] I felt like I had some momentum from [Friday]. I was really happy with my practice...”

He was second-fastest in practice times, then he grabbed the holeshot in the main event, ran second for a number of laps while holding off the current AMA Supercross Champion, and eventually grabbed third overall on the weekend.

“I’m really happy with the GEICO Powersports team for supplying me a bike and having some of the team here to help me out,” Reardon said. “They helped me out a lot to make this race happen.”

Reardon now heads to his native Australia to race the Super X Series down there while the GEICO Powersports Honda team continues to put things together during the off-season, preparing to take on the 2010 AMA Supercross and Motocross Championships with the 2010 Honda CRF450R and all-new 2010 Honda CRF250R.
