Weston Beach Race Postponed
October 14, 2009, 1:35pm
The annual Weston Beach Race looks likely to be postponed for a short while following the red flag incident on Sunday the 11th of October. The original hope was that the race would be re-run just a week later, as it was back in 2002, but the subsequent increase in legislation for the organizers of such a massive event are so vast as to make the task impossible.
Race organizers RHL Activities spent two days directly following the aborted race in intense meetings with North Somerset Council and the emergency services in an attempt to organize the re-run, but the event has been postponed until further notice as the emergency services are unable to put the required massive resources into place. A statement on the re-running of the 2009 solo race is expected at some time this week.
17 riders were hospitalized for treatment following a pile-up that occured seconds after the three-hour endurance race got underway in terrible conditions. Sixteen-year-old Ty Kellet remains in a serious condition in hospital.
