Murdered motocross championship leader of Guatemala

GUATEMALA (AP) - Costa Rican Oscar Diaz, leader of the national championship motocross of Guatemala, died Saturday in an ambush while returning after attending the sixth stop of the event, local media reported.
Athletes traveling from the track where the championship takes place, which is located in the municipality of San Juan Alotenango, Sacatepéquez, located 54 kilometers from the Guatemalan capital.
According to a police officer, Diaz moved with his compatriot Lewis Boniel and mechanical equipment, the Guatemalan Carlos Zuniga Bustamante, "when in the kilometer 30 were caught by the crews of other vehicles with assault rifles shot," police said.
Boniel and Zuniga were taken by paramedics to a hospital nearby.
The Executive Committee of the National Federation of Motocross deplored and condemned the acts. Diaz said she had traveled from Miami to participate in the championship.
