Unbound Energy’s Wharton Podiums at Steel City
CORONA, Calif. – Unbound Energy’s GEICO Powersports/Honda motocross racers wrapped up the 12-round Lucas Oil AMA MX Nationals this past weekend at Steel City Raceway in Delmont, Pa., with Blake Wharton making the overall 250 class Steel City podium and teammate Brett Metcalfe placing 3rd overall for the entire season in the 250 class.
Beginning with Metcalfe, who placed 8th at Steel City (9-7), the veteran 250 class Australian racer overcame an injury that sidelined him for a portion of the supercross season, bouncing back to match his career-best 3rd place overall finish in 250 class MX racing from 2008. Metcalfe put 25 points between himself and rival Jake Weimer in the chase for the third and final 250 class podium spot, 378-353. The two rivals will meet one more time this fall when Metcalfe represents Australia at the Motocross Des Nations in Italy.
On the 250 podium at Steel City was Wharton, who rallied back in the second moto for a 3rd place finish after placing 8th in the opening moto. In all Wharton would finish in 8th place in the final 250 class season standings with five moto podiums in his rookie campaign racing the MX Nationals.
Also wrapping up a fine season for the Unbound Energy-backed GEICO Powersports/Honda team was Justin Barcia. The rookie racer nailed a podium finish (3rd) in the opening 250 moto at Steel City, then held on for a 13th place finish in the second moto for 6th overall. On the season Barcia placed in impressive 5th with 340 points and nine moto podium finishes.
