Arenacross Rolls Into Reno

  • Arenacross Rolls Into Reno

AURORA, Ill. – The 2009 AMA Arenacross Series completed its trip to California last weekend with the second of three rounds on the West Coast and left the Golden State with a new winner for the season. After a hiatus from the winners circle, Triple Effect Kawasaki’s Brock Sellards proved the critics wrong and captured his first win since the penultimate round of the 2008 season.

This weekend, the series heads to “the biggest little city in the world,” Reno, Nev., and the Live Stock Events Center – for ArenOcross - and the ninth of 11 rounds of action in the 2009 AMA Arenacross Series Championship. Additionally, the series returns to the dual-night racing program that it showcased in the earlier portion of the season. The weekend begins with a first evening of bar-to-bar competition on Friday, February 27 and concludes with a second night of high octane racing on Saturday, February 28. The show begins at 7 p.m. on both nights while amateurs take center stage on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. Tickets cost just $20 for adults and $7 for kids.

In Sacramento, Sellards needed to be at the top of his game in order to overcome the AMA Arenacross Series’ most consistent riders in points leader Jeff Gibson and his closest competitor Nathan Skaggs. After getting a good start, Sellards pressured early leader Skaggs, stalking the three-time winner until making his move just past halfway and setting his sights on the checkered flag.

“I want to thank Charlie and Mary Lee from Triple Effect Kawasaki,” said Sellards. “Some people thought I was too old, but I showed them I can still do it. I want to thank the fans for coming out tonight because they are the ones support us.”

Gibson, who posted a fourth place result, still leads the season standings over Skaggs, but Sellards was able to move into fourth overall and gain valuable points thanks to the win.

In the AMA Arenacross Lites class, the Western Regional Championship reached the halfway of its three-round title fight. Reynard Modifications Suzuki’s Cory Green grabbed the victory while points leader and race one winner Tyler Medaglia finished second aboard his GPF Babbitt’s Kawasaki. With only two races remaining in the championship, a new Western Regional Champion will be crowned in Reno.

With one of the most spacious floors in the country, the Live Stock Events Center provides a stellar canvas for one of the most technical and exciting tracks of the season.

After a off week, the AMA Arenacross Series heads to Wachovia Arena in Wilkes Barre, Pa., March 13-15, beginning at 7 p.m.
