Sign of the (Lap) Times: San Diego
The blue streak continue as both San Manuel Yamaha’s Chad Reed and Boost Mobile/Yamaha of Troy’s Jason Lawrence recorded the fastest lap times in their respective class en route to the third consecutive Yamaha sweep. Believe it or not, after practice Lawrence actually had a faster time than Reed, but in the main events it was Chad Reed’s 49.568 being the fastest inside Qualcomm Stadium. Lawrence topped the Lites class with a 50.454.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Tim Ferry stepped up in his farewell to SX in California for 2008, as his fastest lap time was less than a half second slower than Reed. Honda Red Bull Racing’s Davi Millsaps was third, followed by Torco Racing Fuels Honda’s Kevin Windham and Andrew Short. Props to both David Vuillemin and Jeff Alessi, the latter having the ninth-fastest lap time on his Bad Boy Energy Drink Honda in his first race back.

The one lap time that does stand out came on Lap 13, when Chad Reed dropped his YZ450F in the sandy first turn, resulting in a 57.312. Millsaps ran a 51.645 on Lap 13, then dipped into the 50-second range for two laps, looking to put a gap on Reed. Chad then dug down and on Lap 17 when he reassumed the lead from Millsaps with a 51.219. On Lap 18 Reed dropped down to a 49.643—his third-fastest lap time of the main!—gapping Millsaps for his 31st career SX win, and preventing Millsaps from getting his first.

Lawrence led the Lites riders again, but he was closely followed by both Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey and Torco Racing Fuels Honda’s Jake Weimer, as all three riders were within a half-second of each other. The second and third-place finishers in the main (Tom Hahn and Bobby Kiniry, had the seventh and eighth fastest lap times. Tommy’s younger brother, Wil, was right behind him with the ninth-fastest time. Take a look at all of the fastest recorded lap times below:
