Sign of the (Lap) Times: Yadkin Valley Stomp GNCC

Although we’re officially in the “off-season” of professional motocross and supercross here in the United States and abroad, there is still plenty of racing going on and championships to be decided. One of those titles still in the air is the 2007 Can-Am GNCC crown, where Red Bull KTM’s David Knight leads Am-Pro Yamaha’s Barry Hawk by 12 points in the XC1 Pro Class with two rounds remaining.

This past weekend the series headed to Yadkinville, North Carolina, for the Elka Yadkin Valley Stomp. Am-Pro Yamaha’s Charlie Mullins took his second XC1 win of the season over Parts Unlimited/Moose Honda’s Paul Whibley and former GNCC champion, Barry Hawk. David Knight had an off-day, finishing eighth, after winning round one of the Maxxis EnduroCross series the night before, which was held in Denver, Colorado.

GNCC races for the XC1 Pro class typically average three hours in duration, so conditioning and consistency play a huge factor in the outcome of the race. Races can range anywhere from four to 10 laps, and the Yadkin Valley Stomp XC1 pro event went seven laps. So for this installment of Scott USA’s Sign of the (Lap) Times, we decided to show you the two fastest lap times of the top 10 XC1 finishers from this past weekend. Please note that these times are in minutes and seconds.

As you can see, the XC1 riders were averaging lap times in the 28-minute range, but a few were able to dive down into the upper 27s. In fact, three riders tied for having the best lap time of the day, as winner Charlie Mullins, second-place Paul Whibley and fifth-place finisher Glenn Kearney all recorded a 27:54 for their best lap! Mullins’ fastest time came on lap five; Whibley’s on lap six, and Kearney’s on lap three.

In the XC2 Lites class, which is exclusively for 250Fs and 125 two-strokes, the lap times were about a minute off, with times in the 28s and 29s. Consistency and conditioning again were the order of the day, as Am-Pro Yamaha’s Thad DuVall clocked the fastest lap of the race on the very last lap with a 28:39, which moved him from third place into first. You know you’re in shape when you clock the fastest lap on the last lap of a race that lasted three hours and 13 minutes! The second fastest time went to Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki FAR’s Josh Weisenfels, who clocked a 28:44 early in the event before smashing his foot on a tree and dropping back to third place at the finish.
