  • Ryan Villopoto is the 2007 AMA Motocross Lites Champion

The Toyota AMA Motocross series rolled into San Bernardino, CA this weekend to host the final stop on the tour. The Lites championship race was between Ryan Villopoto, who had extended a comfortable lead in the points, and Ben Townley, who was looking to win his first AMA outdoor championship. The highly anticipated race would come down to the final moto.

Moto 1: Just like we have seen all season from these two, the Townley and Villopoto show kept it consistent in moto 1. Townley jumped out to an early lead, grabbing the holeshot, but Ryan was not far behind. Josh Grant hung back in third for the first ½ of the moto before being taken out of the race by the monstrous first turn. Villopoto closed the gap on his teammate Ben Townley by the halfway mark and eventually made a pass for the lead. Ryan would go on to win moto 1 with a 3 second cushion with Townley taking the 2nd. Another teammate, Brett Metcalfe rounded out the podium for moto 1.

Moto 2: With the championship almost locked up by his teammate, Ben Townley showed his determination all the way to the end when he jumped out to a commanding holeshot to start off moto 2. Ben would eventually run away with the 2nd moto win. The race stayed consistent with Townley taking the win and Villopoto claiming the safe 2nd for the moto with Brett Metcalfe in third and newcomer Austin Stroupe following his teammates in 4th.
