Burkhart Dominant at AMA Supermoto in Nashville; Carlson picks up fifth win in Supermoto Unlimited; Pingree keeps winning streak alive in Supermoto Lites
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (September 1, 2007) - Graves Yamaha's Mark Burkhart claimed his fourth victory of the season under the lights of the Music City Motorplex for the AMA Supermoto Championship. Rip it Energy Aprilia's Ben Carlson prevailed in M&R AMA Supermoto Unlimited competition, while Troy Lee
Designs Honda's David Pingree extended his winning streak to four in the Hot Wheels AMA Supermoto Lites class.
Troy Lee Designs Honda's Jeff Ward of Newport Beach, Calif., grabbed the holeshot to start the AMA Supermoto main event. Burkhart of Pataskala, Ohio, followed in second and the two riders began to pull away from the field. Burkhart tracked Ward in the early stages and eventually made an inside pass to take over the lead. Burkhart held on for the win, with Ward finishing second. Monster Energy Kawasaki's Chris Fillmore of Oxford, Mich., was
third.
"The top speed of my Yamaha really helped here on this track tonight", said Burkhart. "Last weekend was a bad weekend and hopefully we don't have anymore of those. It was fun racing with Jeff (Ward). He is a smart racer, so it will be a battle to the end".
Carlson of West Bend, Wis., took the lead on the third lap from HMC KTM's Kurt Nicoll of England, and then distanced himself from the field to capture his fifth win of the season. Nicoll managed to hold off the charge from teammate John Lewis of Brandamore, Pa., as the pair finished second and third, respectively.
"We just put our heads down and raced hard tonight, said Carlson. "Last week I crashed hard and I crashed here earlier so hopefully that is out of my system. I wanted to get upfront to be able to pick good lines and set the pace. This track was perfect for me. I love the speeds you could get up to tonight".
Pingree, of Temecula, Calif., jumped to the lead and never looked back en route to the win in the Hot Wheels AMA Supermoto Lites main event. Graves Motorsports Yamaha's Brandon Currie of Anaheim, Calif., made the race for second interesting, having to overcome to stop and go penalties (for jumping the start and then later for missing the penalty area). He would work through the field earning second place ahead of LA Fuel Husqvarna's Adam Cini of San Diego, Calif.
"I saw Brandon coming the whole race," said Pingree. "I knew I better pick it up or he would catch me. I really enjoyed being in Nashville. The AMA doesn't have a national motocross stop or a supercross here so I never thought I would come to Nashville to race. I am happy to come away with a win."
