Doug Henry Benefit
Connecticut motorcycle racing legend Doug Henry was severely injured last March in a track accident. In conjunction with our state’s first ever Supermoto race, Henry’s friends, fellow riders and supporters offer two unique fundraising events. First is a benefit dinner and silent auction after the first day of the New England Supermoto Classic race, Saturday, August 25th. Next is a very unique opportunity for local amateur racers to ride in the woods with the pros the day after the race, Monday, August 27th. The ride with the pros (Jeff Ward, Mark Burkhart, Troy Lee, Carey Hart, Kurt Nicoll & others) is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It includes a cookout lunch and some great riding and bashing through the New England Woods. Registration to ride is $100 per rider. A limited number of guest and spectator spots are available for $20. More information about the Supermoto race and the Doug Henry fundraisers is available by calling: 860-489-6976 or visit: www.NewEnglandSupermoto.com.
Henry was born in 1969 in Milford, Conn., and learned to ride dirt bikes growing up in Shelton. He is a three-time American Motorcycle Association (AMA) motocross national champion and AMA Hall of Fame inductee. After breaking his back in a 1995 race, Henry recovered to become the first motocross rider to win a Supercross race on a four-stroke motorcycle. He was named AMA Pro Athlete of the Year in 1998. After retiring from motocross in 1999, he got back into the sport in 2003 riding Supermoto sponsored by Yamaha. He was immediately considered one of the best Supermoto racers in the world, besting the world champion in a 2005 race. Last year after another severe accident which threatened to end is riding career, Doug’s perseverance and determination accomplished the impossible and he finished 2nd overall for the year in AMA Supermoto. This year another accident has threatened to end his riding career and has changed his life forever.
Never a quitter, Henry’s rehabilitation will be very expensive. An authentic motorcycle racing star from Connecticut, the Supermoto Classic and the benefits are an excellent opportunity to show support. The ’07 New England Supermoto Classic will be held in Stafford Springs, Conn. The first day, Saturday, August 25th, gates open at 10 a.m.; main event is amateur racing and pro practice.
