Monster Energy Kawasaki's Stewart Wins Two Supercross Titles in Seattle
SEATTLE (April 28, 2007) – Monster Energy Kawasaki rider James Stewart captured his 12th win of the year Saturday at Qwest Field and clinched the AMA Supercross and World Supercross GP championships. Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto took the win in the Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class in front of his hometown crowd.
Stewart headed into the second to last race of the Amp’d Mobile Supercross season looking to lock up the series championships and turned in an impressive ride on one of the trickiest tracks of the season.
“I am just so excited right now,” said Stewart. “This has been a lifetime goal for everyone, Kawasaki, myself and my family. And to be able to clinch something that I have been going after for so long, I’m stoked.
“I have been really happy with all my titles, but this one definitely sticks out, a lot. It’s like the top of the line to win an AMA Supercross title and there is no higher honor than that.”
Teammate Timmy Ferry rode to a solid 4th-place finish and locked up third place in the season standings in AMA Supercross and World Supercross GP.
“This is a huge accomplishment for me, especially with one race to go,” said Ferry. “This is something that I did not expect coming into this year so it makes it that much more exciting.”
In the Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class, Villopoto, who clinched the championship the previous round in San Diego, rode an impressive race and brought home his seventh win of the season.
“I am glad to have already won the championship before coming here, because I didn’t want to have to come up here and race for the title and have it raining,” said Villopoto. “Anything can happen out here as far as weather goes and I just didn’t want to take that chance.”
Teammate Chris Gosselaar, after getting the holeshot, rode strong to round out the top-five.
Cernic's Kawasaki rider Jeff Gibson put in a solid finish in the AMA Supercross class, earning 10th place in the main event. Teammate Paul Carpenter finished a spot behind in 11th.
MotoSport Kawasaki's Joaquim Rodrigues finished out the Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Lites series in 19th position.
