  • Dany Torres Wins Red Bull X-Fighters

MEXICO CITY (March 24, 2007) – In front of 42,000 fans inside Monumental Plaza de los Toros, the world's largest bullfighting arena, 19-year-old Spanish star Dany Torres threw down the most powerful tricks of the night and captured the crown at Red Bull X-Fighters Mexico City. Perrenial contender Nate Adams was runner-up, followed by Aussie star Robbie Maddison, who rounded out the podium.

Ten of the world’s most respected freestyle motocross riders from eight countries followed the call of the Red Bull X-Fighters and travelled to Mexico to be part of this year’s competition. Packed with elements of traditional bullfighting, flamenco performances and musical acts, the contest format had ten top riders compete in a testosterone-loaded, head-to-head battle.

Among the judging criteria were difficulty and execution of tricks, variety of tricks and usage of course, style and show aspects, and overall impression. At Red Bull X-Fighters, the crowd also has a big say in the judging of a rider’s presentation, so Mexico’s most famous TV host, Facundo, acted as the judge of the spectators’ voice.

Fan favorite Ronnie Renner threw his signature whips, and Swiss star Mat Rebeaud, winner of last year’s Red Bull X-Fighters, Mexico City, still recovering from a broken femur, was kept from showing all of his skills. Local hero Johan Nungaray appeared on the arena floor to a massive roar but also failed to make the final.

Three riders made their way into the super final - Maddison was his usual smooth and progressive self and impressed the crowd and judges by performing one flip after another. Adams pulled super clean Catwalks, Cordova Backflips and Lazy Boys and also made a mark with the voters.

However, neither Maddison nor Adams could stop 19-year-old young gun Dany ”DT“ Torres. Torres threw super high Cliffhangers, Turndowns, Superflips and Heelclicker Backflips and finished with a huge Turndown Whip. The combination of sophisticated riding, a wide variety of tricks and interaction with the crowd earned him victory.

“I watched Maddo and Nate ride so well so I knew I had to push it to the very limit in my run,” said Torres. “It worked out and I am so happy!”

RESULTS RED BULL X-FIGHTERS MEXICO CITY 2007:

1. Dany Torres (ESP)
2. Nate Adams (USA)
3. Robbie Maddison (AUS)

The Red Bull X-Fighters are going on tour for the first time in 2007. At the next stop on May 26 at Slane Castle, Ireland, FMX legend Travis Pastrana will be rested and ready to challenge for the win. The inaugural stop in Moscow on June 30 will be followed by the final event in Madrid on July 27.
