Stewart Wins Record Third Amp’d Mobile Supercross in Anaheim; Kawasaki’s Villopoto Cashes in Third Win at Angel Stadium
ANAHEIM, Calif. (February 3, 2007) – Kawasaki’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., became the first rider in history to sweep all three Anaheim Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP/Amp’d Mobile AMA Supercross Series races at Angel Stadium. Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash, picked up his fourth AMA Supercross Lites main event win.
Honda’s Nick Wey, of Murrieta, Calif., won the $1,500 Progressive Direct Holeshot Award. By the end of lap one Stewart moved into the lead followed by Yamaha’s Chad Reed, of Tampa, Fla., and Kawasaki’s Tim Ferry, of Dade City, Fla. On lap four Stewart spun out, allowing Reed to move on to Stewart’s back tire. The next lap Stewart and Reed traded positions for the lead.
Once regaining the lead Stewart rode the next 15 laps flawlessly. Reed finished second and Ferry finishes third. Tonight was Ferry’s first podium of the season.
“It was a great race,” said Stewart. “When Chad (Reed) passed me, it kind of caught me off guard. There are no hard feelings out there.”
Villopoto started the main event by winning the $1,000 Progressive Direct Holeshot Award. Honda’s Josh Grant, of Riverside, Calif., came around turn one in second followed by KTM”s Martin Davalos, of Cairo, Ga., who held down the third place position until lap nine when he came up short on a jump and allowed Yamaha’s Jason Lawrence, of Carlsbad, Calif., to take over third place.
Grant finished in second and Lawrence finished third. Villopoto joined Ivan Tedesco and Ernesto Fonseca as the only AMA Supercross Lites riders to sweep all three races at Angel Stadium.
“I was happy to pull the holeshot tonight, and to get all three of the wins in Anaheim,” said Villopoto. “That was actually the first holeshot of the year for me. I’m hoping to clinch the championship at San Diego (in two weeks) before the east coast series goes into its eight-week break. That way I have nothing to worry about when the season starts again.”
Tonight’s AMA Supercross race will air on CBS Sports, Sunday, February 4, at 3:00 p.m. EST. The AMA Supercross Lites class race will air on SPEED Tuesday, February 13, at 5:00 p.m. EST. Amp’d Mobile Supercross continues next Saturday, February 10, at Houston’s Reliant Stadium.
