For the first time ever, the Motocross of Nations has come to live television in the U.S., airing on CBS Sports Network Sunday morning, at 7 a.m. EST. This completes the full transformation from old-school news gathering, as Cycle News in the mailbox used to mark the fastest way to find out what happened. Can you imagine that? Team USA's win streak on the line, the race taking place, and fans having absolutely no clue if the team won for several days. Back then, Cycle News wasn't just the paper of record for the sport, it was the only record!
Our man Eric Johnson—who broke into this industry by writing for Cycle News, as did many of us—dug through his archives to find the opening page spread for each Team USA Motocross and Trophy des Nations victory from the early days. We'll post them all here.
By the way, you have your own Cycle News archive, as well. We highly recommend digging into www.cyclenews.com/cycle-news-archives/ where you can find every single issue ever posted in digital form. It's the best bench-racing resource in the sport, bar none. And visit www.cyclenews.com as a source for up-to-the minute race reports and new digital issues as they are posted each week.
