Check out this GoPro footage from Adam Cianciarulo on Saturday, as he gets run into and knocked down by a charging Cooper Webb. As you can see, Webb also went down in the incident, but was able to recover to win the moto and overall.
After the race, Webb was apologetic. "I didn’t mean to do it," he said. "I tend to ride aggressive but that wasn’t one of those. Like I said, he was going out to in and I was going in to out. It was one of those corners were a lot of riders were going in to out so I just thought that’s what he was going to do, and then our lines came together. So I do apologize for that. I’m sure he’s not stoked on it but I didn’t deliberately do it. I think it was a racing incident, for sure."
We also saw Cianciarulo after the race and he was still pretty mad about the crash. We told him Webb apologized on the podium but AC wasn't really having it, saying Webb was too far behind him so there was no way he could have seen him or saw the hit coming. Cianciarulo cited other forms of racing, such as Formula 1 and MotoGP, where the drivers or riders could essentially bump the vehicle in front of them entering every corner, but they don't do it.
Cianciarulo said he saw some stars when he hit the ground and was glad he didn't get hurt worse.
This will of course spark some "Oh! Cianciarulo and Webb were rivals as amateurs!" talk but neither one cited any previous issues as part of this incident. As Webb said, it was a racing incident in so far as it only involved this one race. But it's definitely the case of two riders seeing the same thing two different ways—or one rider not even seeing it coming.
