SPY Del Moto Derby Debuts
“I’ve ridden a 50cc around the fairgrounds during a mini bike race, but have always dreamed of the day when big bikes would tear through Del Mar’s legendary dirt,” says Victor Sheldon, SPY motorsports marketing manager. “SPY is excited to host a fun, family friendly event that will bring race excitement back to the coast, and give the passionate San Diego motocross community an event they can enjoy in their own backyard.”
Seven-time AMA Champion and SPY founding team rider Jeremy McGrath will be on hand for the inaugural affair, in addition to former AMA Motocross Champion Grant Langston and members of SPY’s elite professional motocross team. Further adding to Del Mar’s racing legacy, spectators will witness top caliber riding from top ranking pros and amateurs from all over California and the Southwest chase down the win at this invite-only event. In the spirit of Father’s Day, a special father/son relay race will take place during the day’s festivities for bragging rights as “San Diego’s #1 Motocross Family.”
“San Diego has a rich history in motocross that goes way back, even before ABC’s Wide World of Sports showing coverage of the legendary Carlsbad Raceway in the late ‘60s,” says Jeremy McGrath, an Encinitas resident. “I’m really excited to be part of the first ever motocross race at the Del Mar Fair.”
SPY will be partnering with Be The Match, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing bone marrow transplants to patients in need—including Jeremy McGrath’s wife, Kim, currently battling Leukemia. With benefactor matches being relatively rare, the event aims to draw a record number of potential marrow donors to help Kim, along with thousands of other San Diegans in need. One hundred percent of the $30 race entry fee goes directly to Be The Match to help with donor processing costs. Personal donations to the organization will also be accepted on site.
“The marrow drive obviously hits home for me,” says McGrath regarding the Be The Match pairing. “A donor at this event could directly affect my wife, along with saving the lives of tons of others. So I invite everyone to come out and join our marrow movement at the Del Moto Derby.”
The first round of racing hits the gates at 10:30 AM, and entrance to this beachside motocross experience is granted with a simple purchase of a San Diego County Fair ticket—available online or at the box office. Adults entry is $13, while ages 6-12 and 62 and up are $7—free admission to children age five and younger.
