In some ways, the expected occurred in qualifying practice at Anaheim Stadium today, where a new format (with one untimed practice followed by two timed ones) was implemented.
In the 450cc class, James Stewart was fastest, as expected. And in the Lites class, as many expected, Jake Weimer was fastest. However, that’s not all that went on.
Lites
As was previously pointed out, Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Jake Weimer was fastest in both practices today, and he was the only Lites rider to dip into the 58-second range, putting in a 58.797. Second overall was DNA Shred Stix/Star Yamaha’s Max Anstie with a 59.228, just in front of Weimer’s teammate Josh Hansen, with a 59.271. Then came Trey Canard with a 59.274, Ryan Morais with a 59.335, Broc Tickle with a 59.383, Blake Wharton with a 59.493, Gautier Paulin with a 59.518, Tommy Searle with a 59.579, Wil Hahn with a 59.652, and then Cole Seely with a 59.812. The top 11 are separated by just over a second.

Josh Hill is also a surprise with the third-fastest time at 57.202, in front of Davi Millsaps (57.278) and Justin Brayton (57.355). Chad Reed was sixth after pulling out of the second practice session with stomach problems. And Ryan Villopoto was checked out at the Asterisk rig after the second practice with a sore wrist from a crash in the beginning of the session.
