James Stewart won the Superpole on Friday night...

This year’s Rockstar Energy Drink U.S. Open featured some new and exciting changes, one of which was the Fast Qualifier event. Each night of racing kicked off with 11 riders taking to the track in one-lap/one-rider qualifying runs to determine a Superpole fast qualifier. The Superpole winner each night then received a $10,000 bonus and was then eligible for that night’s Toyota Trifecta bonus.

The 11 eligible riders for the Superpole event included past winners of the U.S. Open, past and current AMA and World Supercross champions, and past and current AMA Supercross Lites champions. Added into that mix was the top two riders based on practice times from the day’s practice sessions.

Friday night
Everyone anticipated this new event on Friday night, and Team Kawasaki’s James Stewart edged out SoBe/Samsung Mobile Honda’s Kevin Windham and his new teammate, Tim Ferry. Defending U.S. Open champion Ricky Carmichael finished fourth, while Stewart went on to win the first Toyota Trifecta by pulling the Progressive Direct Holeshot and winning the main event.

Saturday night
With the track reversed, it dropped the lap times a bit, and Kevin Windham was able to lay down a blazing-fast lap to edge out Makita Suzuki’s Carmichael. The previous night’s winner, Stewart, almost threw it away in the whoops, costing him some valuable time and a chance at another Toyota Trifecta. Team Kawasaki’s Michael Byrne ended up third. Although Windham nailed down the first part of the Toyota Trifecta, he wasn’t able to complete the feat, as he finished fourth in the main event.
