Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Rev Up. As Bill and Ted once said, “Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.” We’ve been inundated with apocalyptic propaganda since the turn of the millennium, but only recently have I really began to raise a stern eye brow. I suppose the kicker with this was the freaking EARTHQUAKE I felt as I was walking across the street in Greensboro, North Carolina. No more than thirty seconds before I felt what I had only previously felt in California, I was watching the news story of Hurricane Irene as she was on the war path. I brushed off the Hurricane, then when the damn ground shook and pounded I had to, as they say in The South, “Take a step, backards.”
It’s been the hottest summer I can remember, the full moons have been weird, we have the aforementioned tree bender and building shaker, and it’s a mere ninety days before 2012 flips up on the calendar. All this has your pal Hattica a bit weary as you read.
Ah, who cares? The NFL is just around the corner and we have the final three rounds of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championships set to stretch the throttle cables.
Wilson leads the 250 Class as the series heads to Southwick.

Break time is over. With the gnarliest course on the tour in our cross hairs, there is a lot that is going to go down. The sands of Southwick offer no quarter. The only way to ride the sand is with your right arm at your rib cage and your balls deftly placed on the gas tank. Her granules will reach places on rider and machine mother nature or mechanic never intended. Southwick is where series points leads go to die and those still in the hunt go to breathe fresh life.
We have two summer dreams yet to grow to fruition. We have some boys wearing momentum and we have some that need to show up this weekend ready to vanquish and conquer. Period. There is a lot of static out there right now, folks. But the real mind bender is the four gate drops that have us all ready to mash the fast forward button to Saturday afternoon. And let me tell you, I’ve been waking up sans alarm clock at 4:30 a.m. every day this week. You see, it’s Bristol week for my tribe and unless you’ve been there for the night race, you just don’t know. It’s the real deal Holyfield, Jack.
But, I digress.
250 Class
With Dean Wilson leading the charge in the 250 Class, he has to keep it together through the weekend and then he can play defense through the last two rounds. He was my guy preseason, and while “Bad” Blake Baggett has been the heat this summer, I think 2012 will be his year.
That said, Motocross 338 has not been kind to Mitch Payton’s ass-kicking machine. Be that as it may, the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit brigade has been fairly safe the last couple visits, and if anyone knows how to make the machine last, those guys...ahem, what am I saying? That damn team is bulletproof. If anything goes wrong with Dean, Blake, Broc, or Tyla, it won’t be the bike.
450 Class
Now it gets sticky. The Thunder hasn’t been heard since he saw God at Millville, and well, that’s OK. He’s still in the hunt and for some reason I still think that Chad Reed is going to pull this thing together. If he is going to, he has to win this weekend. 1-2, 2-1, or something really close to it. Plus, the RV Park Express has to come off the tracks.
What do you have to say about ole “wild thing?” Remember how fast Justin Barcia was at Southwick on a 250F? Ho, ho. Wait till you get a load of the long hair hessian on that nasty CRF450R on Saturday. I say that he wins a moto at the very least this weekend. The only thing that slowed the kid down at Southwick was the lack of horsepower. Go ahead and scratch that off the list as there will be no bogging for #17 this time around. No damn bogging at all. He’s going to be scary fast. Hope he can hang on!

It’s on. It’s so on, my son.
So, strange days may be upon us, but as I like to say, “When the going gets weird, it’s simply time to get weirder.” Oh, you’ll be able to see a plethora of weirdos along the treeline at the ‘Wick this weekend. Motocross 338 has a salty platoon of fans that are ready to bring the noise this weekend, rain or shine.
It’s going to be a good one, guys. Here she comes.

All I can say is get the desert tanks on the bikes and detune the motors some so they'll survive MX 338...
Need 2 RV holeshots and its over for the boys. Hope Reed and 17 can stay infront of Rd too so RV can get out of here with a 19 point lead if RD goes 3-4!! Cores anything can happen at the Wick!! So glad I will be there!! Hope the storm holds off too, Better raceing in the Dry and I will be on the bike so i hope to stay dry LOL

Bill C - My fellow Ginger will rise to the occasion I think. He is turning out the RV performance we expeded to see at just the right time..as long as RV starts top 5, like last week he can slice through the pack at will...If he gets a couple hollies, even better.....just blast this in his pits and get him fired up!!!

Sorry folks but its going to be a wet weekend at the wick, should be interesting. I hope Chad can put it back together, RD should be strong in those conditions, but I have a bad feeling... Barcia is to wild and all over the place on the track. He is going to take someone out this weekend, and its not going to be pretty. He does remind me of Danny "Magoo" Chandler but more dangerous, At least Danny was not hated by his fellow riders like Barcia is

Resisents of NY city and all NY and NJ coastline residents were just ordered to evacuate those areas. There is talk of the same for CT and Mass etc. Depending where the hurricane hits land, we could have 100 mph winds etc. ....wait, CT just declared a state of emergency. Should be an interesting race.....maybe a one moto shortened format?....Hey, I bet John Dowd is thinking he might be able to win this thing! I hope there are a few spectators that show up to see it!

Lets hope RV gets a holeshot, RV will have a harder time getting Barcia at this track if he doesnt. Barcia will have superpowers at Southwick, guys always do at thier home tracks.
The battle between Villo and Dungey is more interesting with Barcia in the mix. He could take either Dungey or Villo out at any moment.
Things were starting to get kind of dull with Reedy out of the title race. In addition, there was never any sign of loose cannon Stewie.
But then loose cannon Barcia came along and brought with him the drama necessary to make things interesting again.

Since you are in Greensboro, NC, why don't you cruise up the road about 15 -20 miles (HWY 29N) and do a story on Rolling Hills Cycle Park. This place was closed due to problems sighted by the EPA (so they say). They actually held the amateur national champinships in (I believe) 1983 before it went to Lorreta's. It should make for a great story. A really great track with lots of history!!!!

Amazing that a 40+ rider lines up for and is competitive in a national Mx....
If you get stuck in the hurricane after the race, RUN !! Matthes will probably eat you, once they close the Starbucks. He is suspected of eating an entire busload of people in and around the PA/NY area.

Dungey absolutely must get aggressive or else all will be forgotten...
So the "writer" of this "article" thinks that Reedy will still pull it together But any intelligent fan knows that the only way that Reedy will win the championship is if Barcia takes out Villo and Dungey.
Hang on a second .... I think I understand now. Barcia is a total loose cannon and he is capable of taking out both Villo and Dungey. And Barcia almost did take out Dungey in the last race..
And if Barcia takes out Villo and Dungey, perhaps the "writer" of this "article" has a point after all and Reedy does still have a shot at the title.

Cant wait for the sand of Southwick. The pressure cooker is reaching its climax, and the contenders will not disappoint!
On a side note, for all those CP fans or haters or french haters for that matter, and those that understand French, the following article will crack you up (regardless of where u stand). Trust me when I say that the Pourcel haters in France are very much alive and well.
The interesting things I found out in the article are:
1. The des nations next year are going to happen BEFORE the GP season has finished (WTF?!?!?!)
2. Pourcel is doing is up most to undermine the current riders selected for team France (musquin, frossard, paulin) by expressing his disappointment for not having been selected. He is doing the JS thing of last year, but going a step further and not expressing his support for the team and current riders.
3. The guy will basically decide on AMA or GPs by the end of September.
This is relevant to Team USA supporters, cause the way I see it, France is gonna be your nearest competition at the des nations this year (and it doesnt help that the race will be in France). Personally I think it would be cool for the home nation to take it, however I think it is unlikely. Why? There are too many weak teams with one super fast rider that can finish between the ryans and frossard and paulin (eg Reed, Cairolli). Ok thats not too many, BUT, they may very well determine the outcome of the des nations.

The nations in it´s present format is a rigged fraud, that´s why team cheat will win again. It should be team cheat v Europe v the rest of the world. Pick 10 riders each and let her rip. Team cheat would come 3rd. Ha ha ha.
I´m looking forward to the hard pack at southwick this weekend (well compared to a real sand track like Lommel, it is pard pack). Reed and Wilson will score 1-1´s

I don't have the stats at work for the other prior events but I don't recall NC
having it there.

Nice write up Andy! It will be mayhem and there will be self induced crashes. Anyone remember Reed eating it coming from out of the back section? Carmichael had a nasty swap coming down that back hill as well. He saved it but came damn close to pitching it. That track can eat you up, and when it's wet it gets some deep ruts and square edged underneath. That first turn is so sharp that the holeshot will be a huge factor. Gotta stay upright through there or your done.
Can't wait to see it!!!

I think the storm will be late enough to get the race in Welker. I am Ridding up and expect to get wet at some point in the day or the ride home anyway.
@ BillC Ride safe and be prepared I have ridden through some pretty bad storms on my Harley's. The wind can trick you just as you think ya got it it can hit the other way. What do you ride on the road?

Yes, the 1981 youth national was at Rolling Hills. Eddie Warren, Keith Bowen, and a sensational Ron Lechien were the stars. It was perfect on Saturday with perfect traction and huge berms. Sunday was knee deep mud.
I think some kid named Davey Coombs scored a top 5 in one of the 80cc classes.
Chad Lough dealt with the EPA issues at Rolling Hills, but when the property owner and longtime promoter Earl Millsaps passed away, Chad's lease was cancelled by Earl's idiot son-in-law.
Andy, you know Chad. You should contact him for a history piece. Davey still owes Chad dinner, too.
