Sign Of The Lap Times: Toronto

Tuesday, March 29, 2011 | 11:15 AM

The Great White North got a little heated over the weekend as Round 12 of Monster Energy AMA Supercross invaded the frozen tundra they call Canada. James Stewart and Ryan Villopoto got a little frisky with each other, while in the Lites class Blake Wharton got a "little payback" as he called it, on Ryan Sipes. With that being said, let's comb through the lap charts, brought to you by Motion Pro, to see how it all broke down.

For the second consecutive week Team Honda's Trey Canard laid claim to being the fastest man in the lap charts as he put down a 54.047 on lap four. Canard was fast all night as he caught and passed eventual winner Ryan Dungey in their heat race. But Canard seemed to struggle with his consistency in the main. Either way he is King of the Lap Charts for another week.

I guess a trip back up north was all the Minnesota native needed to get his first win of the season. Ryan Dungey finally got the proverbial monkey off his back and held off a late charge from Chad Reed to capture his first win of the season. Not only did the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider set the second fastest lap of the night, he did it on lap EIGHTEEN. Yes, you read that correctly. Dungey put the hammer down on Chad Reed late in the race with a 54.113 with two laps to go.

For the second consecutive week the Scot-Canadian Dean Wilson set the fastest lap of the night. But unlike Jacksonville, the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki pilot was able to take the victory along with the title of King of the Lap Charts. Nothing like a little home cooking to get your season back on track, eh?

Sipes put in a very impressive fifth place finish at Tornoto.

DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Yamaha's Ryan Sipes put in a man-child effort in Toronto. After setting the track ablaze in practice, Sipes got together with Blake Wharton early in the race while battling for the lead. Sipes was punted off the track and was quickly a lap down. But the Kentucky native laid the wood and managed to slice through the pack all the way up to fifth before the night was over. It was an impressive effort, to say the least.

Reed also laid down a 54.7 on lap 17 prior to his bobble on lap 18 that enabled Dungey to break away further.

How does Weston Peick get little to no credit for his rides? Makes nearly every main event and finishes near the top 10. Holeshot and leads his heat. This guy reminds me of Canada's Kyle Keast. Big and fast (especially outdoors). Someone hook him up with a support ride. (and a trainer)

2nd fastest time on 18th lap on that gnarly track is insane. Go Dungey!

The only positive thing JS7 has going for him is that this is his 1st offense. He might get away with probation and community service. LOL they should have Bubbas world when JS is doing that community service whick may include volunteer such garbage pick up,food packing and stuff he isnt used to.

Sipes "punted" off the track? He got bumped and tossed it like a baby having a fit.

JBS hitting RV, now that was a true "punting"...

JS7 will be fine. I think he needed something like this to wake his ass up.....well, maybe not this crazy.

RV2 - no front brake after lap 3...not bad....JS7 pretty much cruised after his RV incident, which if you look at it is a good thing....JS7 would usually hammer down to try and catch the leaders, but they were too far ahead, so he cruised to 4th not pushing it.....Dallas should be instersting night...

so anyone notice that the top 4 lites guys have a better average lap than stewart haha. malcom doesnt count tho he did what four laps? but sipes is really impressive since he was on the ground for a long time after wharton got his redemption. best part was the fastest man on the planet didnt out run the cops.

Profile Picture

Average lap time for Dungey and Reed after lap one were within one thousandth of each other. That's hanging it out there pretty good...

Dungey: 55.329
Reed: 55.330

Profile Picture

whats funny is when Bubba does have the fastest lap, people down play it and say he rides over his head or whatever then when he just cruises after a bad start, people say " see he isnt the fastest "...I was impressed JS7 just played it safe...had no pressure from behind and was too far back....Dungey and Reed would have done the same thing.....may be a little to late for JS7 to play it safe rather than push it, but for whats it worth he did the right thing.....I am a RV fan, but JS7 will make a lot of folks eat crow here soon....if not, than maybe he is done...but i doubt that....

Was Dungey's fast lap on the lap that he flew off the track and very deftly managed to seat bounce his way back on? I have read of the incident, but have not see it on video, even after watching the race several times.

Yeah what toncart wrote is what I was going to point out that is some close racing. If you have saw any of my other posts I make fun of this who took out who and all of that cause I call it racing. As far as the James Stewart incident goes I am completly open and waiting to see what happens. I do hope the best works out though. I have myself been lucky so I will neve cast the first stone

tomktm I don't think it was an excuse, The fact is JS was in trafic till he got into 4th. At that point he was 30sec behind 3rd so why would he be pushing?? People don't like to admit JS is that fast. Let me ask you this if you had to pick what guy could turn the fastest lap at any givein track to win a $1,000,000 who would you pick?? That is what Fast means, it does not mean ya win the race or the title it means you are FAST.

It's nice to see an effort like Dungey's on freakin' lap 18?!?! Good effort on Sipes as well, huge effort to get back to 5th (very likely could've been a win w/o crash). This season just got a little more interesting for us. Hopefully the racing will overshadow the drama outside the stadiums.....still a title fight going on in case anybody forgot.

Canard certainly looks like he wants the 'fastest man' title. Too bad we almost never see him and Stewart in the same heat when they're both fresh. It'd be cool to see him pass Stewart.

Well, it'd be cool to see ANYBODY pass Stewart. But until then, he's the fastest. Sorry, guys. I know it sucks. :(

It was the 2nd turn and Yup be screwed up, EVERYONE does. I remember RC doing that at a Nat one time. He had a HUGE holeshot and in the second turn slid out.... It happen. The Rut JS stuck it in was Deep, Might have been down to the cement.

Dungey killed it. Love how the Stewie fans make excuses now when Stewie isnt the fastest. Maybe he isnt anymore guys, face it. The young guys are stepping it up. Just like Stewie did when he came up, these guys are doing the same. Its no different, Stewie is human.

Profile Picture
bd200 wrote: 6:47pm March 29, 2011

BillC, a couple spots at Indy got down to the cement too. In the back rythym section. I like it though, hate the hard and slick tracks. I think the soft dirt makes for better racing myself. Read that you got to walk the track at Toronto, sweet. You did get to see a good race, Reed and Canard pushed Dungey, and Dungey held on well. It was a good one I thought.

Yeah BillC, I'd like to see him make an impression in the nats. It will be interesting if his size vs experience in the asset / liability column is going to be a issue against the PC/GEICO bikes. The #25 certainly has looked fast often and most of the credit goes to Sipes but, that bike is no slug.....

What was Wharton thinking? he's trying to bang bars with the leaders and he's just a Slowpoke! Fake it till you make it i guess he thinks. it got him a 3rd, a dirty third. Barcia nutriders!!! Look, your boy got beat. He had the holeshot and dean straight up outrode him. Caught him, passed and never looked back. Maybe some more panic revvs and barcia would have won. The dunge is back, his riding looks robotic. Mistake Free kinda like Reed. Bad news for Poto, he needs a win, Badly

Barcia had a 19 point lead over wilson, going in, and is riding with a broken wrist, with 2 rounds to go. Why should he battle with dean, when he doesn't need to ?
Smart riding if you ask me. He wants to be the champ.

Profile Picture
Carlsbad wrote: 1:51am March 30, 2011

Barcia will coast into this 250E title while keeping his eyes on the bigger prize, 250MX. Barcia is duh, winning.........The scoreboard doesn't lie, never has.......Yeah, I went there.
My only reservation is 250E/W shootout, all bets are off for that one. With the new format, it might make it irrelevant........or not. I'm betting not.

BD200, don't kid urself, if JS gets up front RD will have nothing for him, as for Barcia, don't think he had much for Wilson even with a pts lead, it's not really smart riding if ur just plain slower that day!

Profile Picture
Carlsbad wrote: 2:01am March 30, 2011

Is there going to be an E/W shootout title awarded? Will it have any added significance? Will it make the winner "Combined Champion"? Is that better than a regional title? Is the purse double?

Profile Picture
BillC wrote: 7:25am March 30, 2011

Yes bd200, Walked the track with all the guys it was very cool, was there for the riders meeting after the track walk too. TC took it to RD in the Heat but RD turned it up in the main for sure!! RD was fast all day in the practice and timed practice. I know you don't like to hear it but JS is fast, He rode around most of the time and with a few mins lift layed down the best time by 1sec!! RD was at the top of the leader board most of the time than JS just layed it down. It was agreat day though, in the pits and everything. Had a nice pass :) Was even at the podium right after the race. TC was the coolest guy, Signing everything for people and throughing it back up to the fans in the stands, RD and Reed were not as good at that. I said to RD I bet thats a load off your back and he just smiled.

Profile Picture
BillC wrote: 7:28am March 30, 2011

One more thing about the track walk that I thought was neat, JS's mom and dad where out there too and his mom is in the whoop section and I hear her tell big james this will be the line pointing to the right side.... She was 100% right too. It was the Hot line in the main!! Thought that was cool.

BILLC, I have never once said Stewie wasnt fast. I have been picking him to get a win for weeks. I am just saying he isnt the fastest guy at every single race anymore. He may get it for one lap now and again, but to be fast and steady for 20 laps, he isnt the fastest anymore. Not every race.

I hear ya, But to watch him he just looks dif than everyone else out there, His style the lineshe takes. We were watching him wondering when he was going to go for it, He would hit one scetion and slow down, look around take off slow down, stop, Then bam he dropped the hammer and tosted everyone. Who does that?? Seemed like it was so easy for him wile others worked every lap. one other thing about the track walk, RD and Goose seem to look At the track and talk way more than the other guys.
