It’s been thirty years now that an American rider last won the FIM Motocross World Championship. Back in 1994 Californian Bob Moore won the 125cc title on the globetrotting Grand Prix circuit. Since then, various riders have tried—Ryan Hughes, Mike Brown, Sean Hamblin, Thomas Covington, and even Ryan Villopoto—but none have managed to accomplish what Moore did back in ’94. Which now brings us to Gavin Towers. The 20-year-old Pennsylvanian was a member of the Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing development team for the 2024 Supercross Futures program but was transferred onto the VRY Yamaha Official EMX250 team to replace Janis Reisulis in this year’s EMX250 Class in the FIM Motocross World Championship. Having now contested a couple of EMX250 rounds in Germany and Latvia, we tracked down the kid from just outside of Pittsburgh to get his take on his brave new world.
