Motocross was always on the search for “professionalism.” I believe there are two reasons for this. First, motorcycles had a bad reputation back in the day, fueled by Harley-riding Hell’s Angels and even a 1950s Marlon Brando movie The Wild Ones that painted a dark picture of motorcycles in American culture. The Japanese manufacturers, and later the industry as a whole, pushed back against this stereotype, from the “You meet the nicest people on a Honda” ad campaign to a “Discover Today’s Motorcycling” marketing program created by the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) in the late 1980s.
