My job is to tell stories. So I find a certain joy in the symmetry of normal things. At the end of the High Voltage GNCC, I spotted five-time GNCC Champion Rodney Smith hanging outside of the Beta semi. Rodney now manages that team. The Monster Energy/Babbitts Kawasaki truck was parked next to it. That team is managed by Fred Andrews. Twenty years ago, I was covering the GNCC races and Rodney and Freddy were the top dogs. Here they were now, side-by-side again.
“Yeah but now we’re old,” Andrews joked.
What’s even funnier is, ten years before their GNCC battling days, Rodney and Freddy were fighting for spots in 250 supercross main events. They’ve been in the trenches for 30-plus years together.
I had pitted myself against myself. “No way, man, I bet the previous owner was really fast.”
“No, he was slow,” Tim said.
