Customized Podium Goggles
by Davey CoombS
Riders wearing their goggles around their necks on the podium is a time-honored tradition that goes back to the racing days of Roger De Coster. Showing off the brand name on the strap gave early goggle companies like Carrera and Baruffaldi instant advertisement, as in, wear our goggles and you can win too. Every sponsored rider knew that before stepping on the podium for a trophy and an interview, they first needed to pull their goggles down around their neck.
But the exposure wasn’t always guaranteed, as the strap could be positioned wrong, or even covered by a towel, covered in mud and roost, or maybe just upside down. Into this predicament stepped the most famous goggle man of all, Bevo Forti. While working for Scott USA back in the day, he had the bright idea of taking a fresh pair of goggles down to the podium with him that were specific for the cause.
