Like Father, Like Son?
Haiden Deegan celebrated his first true Monster Energy Supercross win at AT&T Stadium in Arlington the same way his father celebrated his first win back in 1997 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, ghost-riding his motorcycle off a jump at the finish. Obviously, there were lots of differences between the two moments, and not just the venues. Brian Deegan was aboard a privateer Suzuki RM125 while Haiden was equipped with a Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing factory YZ250F. And Haiden has already won 250 Pro Motocross races as well as the first SuperMotocross 250 World Championship. For Brian, the LA Coliseum race was his one and only win as a professional SX/MX racer, though he would go on to lots of wins and gold medals in freestyle motocross. And Brian literally launched the finish line jump, whereas Haiden waited for a smaller, less-dangerous section that followed the finish. Maybe that’s why there was one other difference: Brian was fined $500 back in 1997, whereas Haiden only got a warning.
