Thanks for continuing these respectful remembrances of those who have contributed to our sport in so many ways in your online feature “The Lives They Lived” for 2025. As weird as it sounds, I look forward to reading this tribute every year, mainly to be reminded of the people who are no longer here, and as a reminder of how fragile life can be and how fortunate we are to still be here.

I was remembering my uncle and mechanic Splint Brewster as I read “The Lives They Lived.” He was a lifelong rider and racer. He was hired by Team Honda in 1982 and worked with Steve Martin, Larry Wosick, Jimmy Ellis, and me. He also passed last summer at 79. A beautiful tribute, as always.

I have an idea after reading your article on starting blocks. Being an AMA referee and orthodontist, what about creating a standard height? Measure every rider from their hip bones down, with the rider standing with boots on, to come up with a maximum height for the blocks that would be the same for all riders, kind of like getting your golf clubs fitted for your personal height. Shorter riders get higher blocks; taller riders get the shorter blocks. This would even out the push advantage. Measurement needs to be from hips down, not rider’s height, as torso height (total height) can be disproportional.
